    The Workshop

More than 60% of humans live within 60 km from the coastline, and therefore coastal zones are important environmental and economic resources. As a complex interface between land and oceans, its investigation from space or using airborne sensors has always been a challenge.

The 4th workshop focuses on the impact of our climate on coastal zones and inland waters, on climate change and its expected effects on European seas, and on the role of remote sensing for its study.

      Topics:

        • changing terrestrial run-off into coastal waters
        • escalation of extreme coastal events: floods, storms, high tides
        • hydrology and water budget evolution of rivers and lakes
        • increasing temperatures in inland and coastal waters
        • impact of vaying physical forcing on morphodynamics and ecosystems
        • new developments of habitats, biodiversity and alien invaders
        • fluxes and fate of seawater constituents, including pollutants
        • role of Coastal Zone Management in adapting to climate change

and their investigation with Remote Sensing:
        • active and passive methods in all spectral ranges, sensor combinations
        • satellite, airborne and ground-based methods including ground truth
        • modelling of radiative transfer, image processing and related aspects.
        • interaction of physical, biological and chemical conditions and processes

The Workshop continues the 1st Workshop (Ghent, Belgium, June 2003), the 2nd Workshop (Porto, Portugal, 2005) and 3rd Workshop (Bolzano/Bozen, Italy, 2007).

The working language at the Workshop is English.

    News

11 November 2009: The Workshop Proceedings are published online

29 April 2009: Further to our recent announcement of ESA Education Office providing a certain number of student travel grants within the ESA Conference Opportunities for Students (ECOSS) we would like to specify the application procedures as provided by ESA. Students wishing to attend the upcoming 29th EARSeL Symposium and Workshops in Chania (Crete), Greece, 15-20 June 2009, and whose submitted contributions have been accepted for presentation during the Symposium or accompanying Workshops, should proceed as follows: Applications shall be made via the ESA Education Website (under "Opportunities" > "Conferences"). On this page there is a link (in the right-hand side panel) to the application system called "ESA Education Projects", or students can access it directly. All the instructions can be found there. PLEASE NOTE: The application deadline for EARSeL on the website is stated as Sunday 26th April, but this deadline will be extended for two weeks.

18 Nov 2008: The workshop schedule is extended from 18-19 June to 18-20 June; the excursion with the research ship will be on 20 June to the Souda Bay, close to the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute.

14 Nov 2008: The Hellenic Centre for Marine Research is offering a research ship for practical demonstrations of hydrographic sensors.

11 Nov 2008: A full day excursion by ship to the Gulf of Souda is planned to be organised on 20 June.

A registration for workshop attendance can be done anytime with the CMS and also on-site during the workshop. The due date for an abstract submission will be on 16 February 2009.

Presenting authors of workshop contributions, oral and poster, are requested to transfer the registration fee before 1 May 2009 to ensure that their contribution will be included in the final programme.

The workshop fee includes the abstract book, participation in practical demonstrations and excursions, participation in the icebreaker, lunches and coffee breaks, and publication in the Workshop Proceedings and in EARSeL eProceedings (reviewed publications only). The Workshop Dinner is not included in the fee.

        Payment before 1 May 2009   after 1 May 2009

    Venue and Accommodation

The workshop will be held at the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania, Alsyllion Agrokepion, Makedonias 1, in 73100 Chania on the island of Crete, Greece (map of Crete). There are several airline connections to reach Chania or Iraklion. MAICh is located 3 km south-east of Chania city centre, 13 km from the airport and 1 km from the port of Souda (map 1, map 2). The EARSeL Symposium website offers a detailed description of the location with travel and accomodation information.

    Publication

Contributions presented at the workshop will be published on the Internet within EARSeL's Workshop Proceedings Series. Manuscripts must be prepared according to the style guide in the sample paper (80 kB rtf file). Please save the file on your computer and use it as a sample paper for manuscript preparation.
